He allegedly said: “School time is over”

A GROUP of 15 people with Down’s Syndrome were asked to leave an Almeria pub by the doorman because it was getting busy.

The Almeria Down’s Syndrome Association (ADSA) reported the incident explaining that the group who were ‘invited’ to leave the ‘Ay Carmela!’ pub in Almeria were composed of 25 to 35-year-old people and three supervisors, many of whom where regulars at the bar.

On this occasion they had gathered at the bar to celebrate the conclusion of an employment workshop they had attended. At around 1:30am as the bar started to fill up, the doorman allegedly walked up to one of the supervisors and said something to the effect that ‘school time is over, the venue is getting busy so the school must close’. The supervisor initially refused, but after the doorman allegedly told him that it was in his interests to leave, they all left the venue without further ado.

ADSA has expressed its condemnation of the attitude adopted by the venue to kick out the group who were only there to have a few drinks and a dance.

The pub’s manager, Juan Manuel Bermejo Roldan, has apologised for the ‘misunderstanding’ that led to the group being told to leave the pub and has expressed his willingness to explain himself to the ADSA. In a press release from the pub, the manager described the incident as ‘very serious’ and says that the doorman denies having asked the group to leave. “He only told one of the supervisors that a customer had complained because the behaviour of one of the youngsters was bothering him,” but that “at no time did he kick them out of the venue,” it said. The association is considering taking legal action against the bar.
